Following the Trussell Trust’s announcement last week that there has been a 170% rise in the number of people using foodbanks between 2012-13, thefoodbankers look at the data surrounding foodbanks and food poverty in the UK.
Almost 350,000 people have had to visit foodbanks over the last year, according to the Trussell Trust.
Trussell Trust foodbanks have handed out food parcels to over 240,000 people in the UK since April 2012. The organisation hands out emergency food parcels to people in extreme need with food donated by shoppers, businesses and local volunteers. Rachel Bayne talked to Liza Cucco, head of the Hackney foodbank about how the vouchers work.

Lambeth council made the national headlines in August after it proposed to provide funding for Brixtons food bank yet claimed it was “holding its nose” as it didn’t believe the scheme is a solution to the boroughs poverty. Elizabeth Mayton, head of Brixton food bank, is also worried that getting involved in formal crisis welfare provision could be “something that completely swamps food banks.”
